It’s all elementary for Fermoy Camera Club

- BILL BROWNE

FOR its July monthly competition, Fermoy Camera Club challenged members to test their imaginations and creative skills using the four elements as their inspiration.

“July brought us many opportunities to photograph the elements – the weather brought us everything – a veritable photographers’ paradise,” said club PRO Helen Arnold.

In typical fashion, the members of the challenge admirably produced a selection of stunning images, which presented guest judge Killarney photographer Terry McSweeney with the tough task of selecting the winning entries.

In the end he could not separate the entries from Noel O’Keeffe and Karen Fleming, declaring them joint winners.

Noel was not about to let a little stormy weather get in his way, with his dark and moody picture capturing the wind blowing sea spray over the waterfront in Whitegate.

Karen opted for a more sedate indoor ‘ home studio’ image creating a wonderful collage of the four elements captured within the confines of wine glasses.

Second place went to George O’Keeffe, who combined fire-fighting training at his place of work with his love of photography to create a dramatic action shot of fire-fighters in action.

Joint third place went to Mary Thornhill’s fiery light trails and Donagh Cronin’ who, like Karen Fleming, combined the four elements into one ‘studio shot’ - even including a live fish.

The grade-three category was won by Norma Brennan, with her dreamlike evening light image taken at a beach in West Cork.

“The theme of our August competition is ‘ light’ – candlelight, evening light, dawn light, artificial light – members can let their imaginations run wild,” said Helen.

“After a very successful outing to Corrin Nature Reserve last week, members are encouraged to keep an eye on our Facebook page for Weekend Wanders destinations. Also keep September 6 free for a very special outing in memory of deceased members of the club,” she added.

New members are always welcome to join the thriving club.
