John leaves behind a legacy and a half
FRIENDS over a wide area learned with regret of the unexpected death of John Kelleher. A deservedly popular person from a highly esteemed Aubane family, his obliging nature, good humour and unassuming disposition truly commended John to all those fortunate enough to make their acquaintance with a gentleman.
The holder of an unique community spirit, John was held in the highest of esteem.
He was one of the leading lights behind the founding of Aubane Social Club on the close of Aubane National School, and the late John was a former Chairman to a club that became the hub of local activity and which initiated senior citizen parties, sports days, night classes, farm discussion group, ‘45’ cards drives, scór, annual outings, open-air dancing and charity events.
Participation in the ‘ The Tops of the Town Competition’ allowed the Aubane community portray its talents and represent Millstreet in the Muintir na Tíre Tops of the Communities with John part of the chorus and featuring in sketches.
Additionally, Aubane Social Club took many Cultural Awards for original floats at St Patrick Day parades, including the Cork City Parade in 1979/80.
One of the major undertakings by Aubane Social Club came in 1998 on promoting the unique celebration of the 250th birthday of the famous Butter Road.
John was part of the organising committee that in association with the local Historical Society, and hundreds assembled over a memorable weekend.
John spent endless hours at St John’s Well on the slopes of Mushera Mountain, as a volunteer and Chairman to St. John’s Well Committee. They put their talents together to erect a grotto.
The first Mass was celebrated on Mid Summer’s Day in 1974, and eight years later, John’s dedication and skill in stone masonry saw the completion of a major project he initiated at the Well. The Stations of the Cross were officially blessed.
That Committee continued to undertake a number of renovations over the years including a water feature, bridge and information board.
A master craftsman, John was instrumental in the erection of a Grotto at Aubane Cross that celebrated its 40th Anniversary last year.
The Kelleher family dedication to Aubane was again highlighted on a plaque sponsored by John’s brother Michael was placed at the Kerryman’s Table to acknowledge the ancient resting place for travellers and traders on the historic Butter road linking Cork and Kerry.
Right across his community, John lent a helping hand to many projects including the cleaning of the Aubane and Glen Rivers, to bringing entertainers such as the Brogeen
Rovers to Aubane. Millstreet Community Council recognised John’s trojan work with a Community Award in 1982. And in more recent years for John, the weekly cards and chat at Aubane Community Centre passed away many hours of recreation.
John was a friend to everybody, his passing is a loss to Aubane but the greatest loss will be felt by his wife Kathleen and family.
