Kilworth 1-10 Grange 0-8

LAST year’s beaten finalists Kilworth made it a winning start to the JAFC when they ran out worthy winners over Grange at Mitchelstown on Friday evening.

The opening half was keenly contested with both teams working the short passing to great effect. Grange opened the scoring when Michael Hennessy kicked a fine point with Kilworth responding when Will Condon pointed a free in the fourth minute.

They were tied again at 0-2, 0-3 and 0-4 each by the 23rd minute when Will Condon, Noel Barry, Brian Sheehan, John Carmody, Noel McNamara and Michael Hennessy kicked over some fine scores for their respective teams.

In the run up to the break just one more score was registered when Will Condon kicked over a free for the winners who held a slender 0-5 to 0-4 advantage at the interval. On the changeover Kilworth did very well during the opening exchanges with Tomás Twomey, Paddy Moakley, Austin O’Hara, Will Condon, Liam Whelan, Nathan Byrne and Brian Sheehan very much to the fore.

In the 34th minute Tomas Twomey intercepted a Grange attack and his clearance down the field saw Will Condon on hand to score the only goal of the game. It was all Kilworth at this juncture with Will Condon (2) and Brian Sheehan adding rapid points that surged them 1-8 to 0-4 in front by the 40th minute.

Grange who lost their opening game to Ballyhooly refused to give in an attempt to keep their season alive with John Carmody, Devon Roche, Alan Deegan, John Magnier making an impression.

Noel Barry set up John Carmody for a well taken point at the mid way stage. With ten minutes of normal time remaining Grange gave themselves a lifeline when Dave Keating and John Carmody had points as they closed the margin to 1-8 to 0-7.

This was the closest they got to their opponents who finished in a flurry. Will Condon added a point from a very difficult angle before the hard-working Liam Whelan set up Nathan Byrne for a well taken point in the 58th minute. Grange completed the scoring when Mark Timlin pointed from long range but there was no denying Kilworth victory.
