Clyda just edge out Fermoy

Clyda Rovers 2-7 Fermoy 2-6

IN this Bon Secours County SAFC game at Killavulle­n on Sunday Fermoy seemed destined for victory for long periods.

Conor Corbett had the opening score a pointed free for Clyda. Fermoy worked hard had three wides before Brian O’Sullivan placed Martin Brennan for a lead goal. Clyda points by Conor Corbett from play and a free had them level after 10 minutes.

Good play by Kieran Morrisson led to a point by Martin Brennan at the water break. On the restart Fermoy were again off target. They had their second goal when

Ruairí O’Hagan had an effort from close range that came back off the crossbar with the rebound going to the well placed Martin Brennan who goaled.

In the 23rd minute good play by impressive Adam Creed found Martin Brennan who offloaded to the inrushing Pádraigh de Roiste who kicked over 2-2 to 0-3. Paul Cronin kept Rovers in touch with a point. Just before half time Ruairí O’Hagan forced a ‘mark’ and Fermoy were comfortabl­y ahead at the break 2-3 to 0-4.

Scores were very scarce again in the second half. Fermoy were held to a mere three points, but still looked like holding out. Ruairí O’Hagan pointed a free and they were two goals clear. Clyda Rovers brought on Seamus Ronayne and Colin Kelly both who played very well.

A free by Conor Corbett struck the post with the rebound coming to Eoin Walsh who placed Cian

O’Sullivan for a point. Fermoy now led by double scores 2-4 to 0-5. Both sides were reduced to 14 players. Shane Aherne forced Elliot Sheehan to save well.

Paudie Kissane pointed from long range 2-4 to 0-6. Fermoy’s Darragh O’Carroll worked well for Padraigh de Roiste who pointed. Fermoy were off target from a close in free. Fermoy replaced their full back Adam Creed.

Clyda brought back on midfielder Conor Flanagan who was now at full forward. Good play by David Walsh led to a high fetch by Conor Flanagan who turned and found the net as they were back in the hunt trailing 2-5 to 1-6.

Fermoy responded well with Arlene Aherne working well for O’Hagan who secured the goal lead 2-6 to 1-6. Clyda sensed they could get a result. Good play by Sean Kelly found Conor Corbett who kicked a massive point as the game to its closing moments.

In injury time a long delivery found Conor Flanagan on the edge of the square.

Flanagan was fouled and he converted the penalty that gave Clyda a vital win having lost their first game. Fermoy have their last game in the group against Bandon while Clyda Rovers face another Carbery side in Doheny’s.
