LEO to host Brexit customs workshop

- BILL BROWNE

WITH the Covid-19 pandemic having taken centre stage over recent months, for many businesses the issue of Brexit has been left to stew on the back burner.

However, with the December 31 deadline for Britain to leave the EU looming ever closer on the horizon, there is little time left to get procedures and regulatory approval in place and, while Covid prevention is critical to everyone’s health, the need to overcome pending Brexit customs issues is becoming increasingly essential for many businesses.

With this in mind the Cork North and West Local Enterprise Office (LEO) will next month facilitate a virtual ‘Prepare Your Business for Brexit Customs’ workshop for local enterprises.

LEO business advisor Joan Kelleher said the workshop, which is being conducted by Austin Rutledge and his team at Export Edge Training and Consultancy, will guide participants through the new Brexit customs processes and documentation requirements.

“The workshop will be suitable for those with basic prior knowledge in customs procedures, as well as those who are seeking to grasp the new customs requirements for their business when trading with the UK,” said Ms Kelleher.

The course will run online from 9.30am to 1.30pm on Friday, October 16 and will cover topics including Brexit planning, declarations & documentation, tariff classifications using practical case study examples.

“The Export Edge team will help participants achieve a clear and concise understanding of key issues such as product commodity codes and custom declaration procedures and provide an in-depth understanding of the customs process and regulations to avoid transit delays, fines and penalties,” said Ms Kelleher.

“The day will be divided into two sessions including a question-and-answer session,” she added.
