GARDAÍ INVESTIGATE ROBBERY AND ASSAULT AT BOWLING MATCH

- BILL BROWNE

GARDAÍ have appealed for help from he public in their ongoing investigation into a robbery and assault following a road bowling match near Fermoy last weekend.

At around 7.30pm last Friday evening (September 19) Gardaí received a report that a man had his jacket and wallet, which it is understood contained what was described as a “substantial” amount of cash, stolen after the bowling game in the Glanabo Woods area.

It is understood that two men wearing balaclavas arrived at the scene in grey coloured Mercedes car and after exiting the vehicle assaulted the man with a weapon, believed to be a baseball bat.

One man struck the injured party a number of times around the head and upper body, while the second man yanked off the victim’s jacket.

A third man, also wearing a balaclava, remained in the car during the incident.

Following the assault the two men got back into the car, which then sped off in the direction of Cullenagh, Fermoy and onwards towards Cappagh Cross, a road junction situated on the Rathcormac to Ballyhooly road.

The injured man was taken to Cork University Hospital where he was treated for a broken collarbone and other “minor injuries” before being discharged from the hospital later on the same evening.

While there is no CCTV network in the rural part of Fermoy, Gardaí are viewing footage taken around the greater Fermoy area in a bid to trace the Mercedes.

“We are appealing for witnesses to this incident or anyone who was in the general Fermoy area, in particular the Glanabo Woods, Cullenagh and Cappagh Cross areas around the time of the incident on Friday who may have seen anything unusual to contact Fermoy Garda station on 025 82100,” said Garda spokesperson.

The spokesperson said they would also ask that anyone in possession of dashcam footage shot from vehicles passing through the area around the time of the assault and robbery to contact them.
