Huge response in Newmarket to Gaza appeal
THE heartrending plight of the people of Gaza was the catalyst for a very successful fundraising coffee morning last Saturday at the Cultúrlann, Newmarket.
Custodian Mossie Angland speaking to The Corkman said:
“It’s just the horror of a desperate situation, whatever about the politics, they are all human beings.
“I really admire the work of Médecins Sans Frontières (Doctors without Borders), they are doing incredible work and the funds collected here on Saturday will go to them.
“It’s just so important that we try to help people in distress. Because of our history here in Ireland, we know what it’s like to be distressed and during the famine, for instance, we received help from all around the world.”
On Saturday, there was a steady stream of people visiting the Cultúrlann between 12 noon and 2pm, to support the event.
“We were bowled over by the generosity of people, they were amazing and we also got lots of food donated,” Mossie added.
Médecins Sans Frontières (Doctors without Borders) deliver emergency medical aid to people in crisis with humanitarian projects ongoing in more than 70 countries worldwide.
Their Medical Teams act fact to endeavour to save lives in conflict zones, natural disasters and epidemics.
Meanwhile, the Cultúrlann, which is one of Newmarket’s greatest success stories, continues to roll out a diverse and entertaining programme of events. ‘Celebrating the life of Brigid – Goddess and Saint’ will take place on Saturday, February 3rd while the award winning Drama ‘Fred and Alice’ will be staged on February 24th.
