Duhallow football leagues commence with Ducon and Nevin Cup fixtures
THE 2024 Duhallow Football League campaigns open this weekend with assignments in both the Ducon Cup and Nevin Cup.
There are two groupings for the long standing Junior A Football League competition, the initial rounds operating up to June before the knockout phase and completion ahead of the championship
Most teams can draw on players involved in the recent U-21 Football County Qualifiers. Tuesday night offers a meeting of last season’s dramatic Ducon Cup final where Knocknagree pulled out all the stops in extra time to stave off Newmarket in a rip-roaring tussle.
Credit to both sides for delivering an absorbing contest in which the tempo never relented all through the 80 minutes. Full forward Denis O’Connor delivered a masterclass in finishing with a massive 1-12 haul including an important goal at the start of extra time that helped Knocknagree take their 10th title after incurring defeats in the previous two deciders.
Eight teams compete for the Junior A Football League prize of the Ducon Cup with holders Knocknagree coming up against Boherbue, Cullen, Kilbrin, Kiskeam, Lismire, Lyre and Newmarket. Match patrons are reminded of a €3 entry fee to all games.
The draws for the 2024 Duhallow Junior A/B Football and Hurling Championships takes place at a Board meeting at the Kanturk GAA clubrooms on Monday at 9pm.
For the Castlecor Potatoes JAFC, there are six teams, one group each team plays five games. Following the conclusion of the group games the team that finishes top will qualify for the final, the 2nd and 3rd placed teams will play a semi-final game.
The Eamon Tarrant Skoda Dealers JAHC involves eight teams divided into two groups of four. Finalists from 2023 Newmarket and Dromtarriffe will be seeded with one team being drawn in each group.
Following the conclusion of the group games, the top two teams in each group will qualify for the semi-finals.
Top team in Group 1 plays the runner up in Group 2 while the runner up in Group 1 meets the top side from Group 1.
The Junior B Football Championship sees ten teams entered, the participants divided into two groups of five.
Following the conclusion of the group games the top two teams in each group will qualify for the semi-finals.
Again, the top team in Group 1 plays the runner up in Group 2 while the runner up in Group 1 meets the top side from Group 1.
