International Women’s Day events at Co. Cork libraries
A Macroom councillor has welcomed the news that a series of events that will celebrate women are to be held across County Cork libraries to mark International Women’s Day on March 8.
Councillor Eileen Lynch, who is chair of Cork County Council’s Women’s Caucus, welcomed the fact that several libraries will present International Women’s Day story-time sessions for primary schools on March 8 and also mark the day with local books clubs, knitting circles and creative writing groups.
Workshops on the art of writing ‘flash fiction’ will also be held in Charleville and Dunmanway
ahead of the launch of the third annual IWD Flash Fiction short story competition which is themed ‘Together’ this year.
Kinsale and Carrigaline branches will host Intergenerational Music and Dance Workshops for grandmothers, daughters, granddaughters, and other children while a ‘Nutrition for Menopause’ talk with registered dietician Aoife McDonald will be held at Midleton and Fermoy Libraries.
Cllr Lynch said that the theme of International Women’s Day this year is ‘Inspire Inclusion’, which she believes is reflective of the local authority’s work to ensure its services are “inclusive and welcoming to all”.
The Fine Gael representative said that library initiatives like free membership, My Open Library and libraries being awarded Age Friendly status make the service “more accessible, inclusive and welcoming to everyone”.
