BANTEER AND AREA WATER SUPPLY UPDATE

Below is the most recent update received this week.

“For information Uisce Eireann assumed responsibility for water services as of 2023. Cork Co Co no longer manage or direct water services other than the support the transition of water service staff.

Forward Planning unit of UÉ has advise as previously that Uisce Éireann propose to provide treated water storage for the Banteer Water Supply Zone. The next stages of the project involve the delivery of the detailed design process, submission of the associated planning application and subsequent delivery of the works construction.

“Uisce Éireann currently anticipate (subject to statutory approvals and funding availability) the commencement of construction works in 2026, with the works currently expected to be substantially completed in 2027.

As such the progress of Banteer is against the background of other UÉ capital project demands across the county with priority given to where service is most critical. Capital projects such as this follow predefined stage processes in accordance with the public spending code, procurement and environment & planning legislation. As such the timelines for delivery can be protracted.

That being said you have also sought interim measures. To this end there is ongoing engagement with ESBN as to required pump power provision where a progress update is scheduled by end of March followed by UÉ internal approvals including finance review and settlement of invoices etc .

“We would also highlight that as a phase 1 to works in Banteer we interconnected to Ballinatona at Ballymaquirke/Ducon concrete, so there is an operational option to feed from Ballinatona in the event of any outage thus reducing the risk of network distributions outages in Banteer”

A new 6 inch rising main was installed in 2023 from Banteer to the Derry Rerservoir with the intention of pumping water to the Derrry reservoir and a new 4 inch distribution main was installed also from the Derry Reservoir to supply Banteer and Duinch, Gouganes. However a new pump needed just above Banteer on the Nadd road has not been installed yet. It was due to be installed in Aug 2023 but is being delayed waiting for a power supply by Irish Water from ESB networks.

It is understood that no application for the new supply had been received by ESB Networks as of last week. This system with some additional temporary water storage at Derry reservoir would give a fully operational temporary supply system and avoid further outages.

Further information has been requested on the above information received.

KILLAVULLEN FAREWELL DORA

The pale moon was rising above Nagle Mountains, the sun was declining beneath Rahan woods, when the sad news broke last Wednesday evening that Dora Looney had passed to her eternal reward.

Dora was one of Killavullen’s popular and adored characters. She was known and recognised far and near, by young and old alike.

Dora had time for everybody she met. She loved to chat and was always interested in those in her company. She greeted everyone with a great big, cheery, bright smile and she had a warm, friendly, welcoming presence.

Dora was witty, charming and always up for a bit of banter – a loveable rogue with a twinkle in her eye. Time spent with Dora was never wasted. Dora was inspirational.

In the face of the challenges life sent her way she rose above them with an energy and zest that served as motivation for others when faced with their own crosses in life. Dora was unbeaten by adversity. She was resilient. She was strong, capable and spirited.

A keen gardener and a well-travelled lady, Dora was a supportive member of our community and enjoyed being part of the various club events and celebrations.

She was a dear wife, a proud mother, a treasured grandmother, a loyal friend and a wonderful neighbour. She was lovely and fair as the rose of the summer, Yet ‘twas not her beauty alone that won us; Oh no, ‘twas the glint in her eyes ever dawning, That made us love Dora, the Rose of Ballybane.

Rest in Peace, Dora. Ní bheidh do leithéad ann arís.

SCHOOLS ENROLMENT

Killavullen and Ballygown National Schools are accepting applications for new enrolments in September 2024.

SCÓR NA BPAISTÍ

Comhghairdeas mór do na páistí ó Chill a’ Mhuilinn a bhí i gcomórtas Scór na bPáistí. D’éirigh leo thar cinn.

It was an absolute credit to all the children that Killavullen NS was awarded Overall Best School in the North Cork Final of Scór na bPáistí. Best of luck to their ballad group, instrumental music group and solo instrumentalist in the county semi-final this Friday night at 7.30 p.m.

Ballygown School was very well represented, with qualifiers in five of the 10 sections. They were thrilled to hear their drama (Léiriú) announced as winners and equally proud of their ballad group, solo dancer, figure dancers and set dancers, who were placed behind excellent competition. All our children left with medals and trophies.

The play progresses to the county semi-final in Ovens next Friday evening and we wish them the very best of luck in their quest to qualify for the County Final. Maith sibh go léir, a phaistí. Bhí sibh go léir ar fheabhas ar fad.

GAA CLUB NEWS

VICTORY SOCIAL – Next Saturday night, will be the one when style is rolled out, and the training forgotten about temporarily. Killavullen GAA has every reason to celebrate on March 9 in the Hibernian Hotel Mallow, at 7.30 PM on that night, when we present a stack of medals to our players.

Not least among those, are the medals to the victorious Avondhu Junior A Football championship winning team, a feat that we last accomplished in 2000. Do attend if you can, it will be a very enjoyable occasion.

LOTTO – There was no winner of the lotto jackpot last Tuesday night when the jackpot on the night was, at €1,300. The numbers that were drawn were 8, 15 and 20. The draw on March 5 will be for €1,400. The winners of the lucky dips, last Tuesday evening were as follows: €50 – Willie Magner (seller – John Angland); €30 – Trish O’Keeffe (seller – Online Sales); €20 – Bessie Rea (seller – Michael Rea). Purchase your ticket from any committee member or from our website – Killavullengaa.com. Thank you for your anticipated and ongoing support.

FORTHCOMING FIXTURES – Killavullen GAA do not have any adult fixtures next weekend, so our forthcoming games, are on the following week.

The 2024 Division 1 football league will see Killavullen travel to Milford on St Patrick’s Day. Killavullen play Deel Rovers on Sunday, March 17, at 11 a.m. in Milford. Our Division 3 team play Kildorrery, in Killavullen on March 18 at 4 p.m.

Do check our website for the best and most up to date fixture lists, as the times, and venues of matches can change, due to pitch availability.

Our intended game of last weekend, Killavullen V Liscarroll – Churchtown Gaels had to be deferred due to the death of Dora Looney of Ballybawn. The huge crowds that descended on O’Connells funeral home in Mallow, on Friday night, and again, at the funeral Mass in Killavullen on Saturday, bore testament to the high esteem that Dora and the Looney family are held in. What warm company Dora was, the door was always open, and early in the morning, or late at night, you were always welcome there. May she rest in peace.

UTILISING THE PREMIUM SEATS IN SUPERVALU PAIRC UI CHAOIMH – Michael Lenihan, Main Street was the recipient of the two premium tickets for the Cork V Kildare Allianz Football league game last Sunday, and he thoroughly enjoyed the experience.

Cork play away next in both hurling and football. The Offaly v Cork hurling game, is on in Glenisk O’Connor Park, Tullamore on Sunday, March 10, at 1.15 p.m. In Football, Meath v Cork is on in Páirc Tailteann on Saturday, March 16, at 2 p.m., and on a bumper day, in Round five, and the concluding game, for Cork in hurling, it is between Wexford v Cork in Chadwicks Wexford Park on Saturday, March 16, at 3 p.m. Cork V Armagh in the Allianz Football League is the final national league games to be played in the Cork venue for this year.

Soon, the intercountry championship games will be quickly upon us. The Munster championship commences in April – the footballers in Páirc Uí Chaoimh against Limerick on April 7, and the hurlers against Clare on April 28 and Limerick on May 11.

The hurlers play Waterford, in Walsh Park, on April 21, and Clare play Limerick in Ennis, on that pivotal day. Cork conclude their program with a trip to Tipperary on May 19. The 2024 Munster football final will be played on Sunday, May 5, So, some great games coming up, to avail of our Premium Tickets.

COMPILING THE HISTORY OF AVONDHU GAA – Avondhu GAA is 100 years old in 2024, and to acknowledge that strong feat, the history of GAA in the division is been written. This will be completed for the Avondhu GAA dinner dance in December in the Hibernian Hotel.

The Avondhu board would like if delegates/club officials seek others from within their clubs to assist. If you are interested in such a project, do contact any club official.

GOLF CLASSIC – Killavullen GAA was most unfortunate in 2023, when our original date for our golf classic (September 15 and 16 2023) succumbed to the elements, and we then had the bad luck, that our second date also had to be cancelled with another yellow rainfall warning.

In 2024, we are surely going to avoid all of that, when we have the golf classic on June 7 and 8 in Doneraile Golf Club. Do keep the day free, and get out and practise in the interval, between now and then.
