Newmarket GAA’s Oskars: A community driven initiative for positive change

-

In a recent interview with Sean Irwin, Chairperson, and Tim Murphy, Secretary, of Newmarket GAA, the focus was on the upcoming Oskars event and its impact on the local community. Here’s what they had to say:

Can you tell us about the goals of the Oskars and how it aims to improve the facilities of Newmarket GAA?

The Oskars event is more than just a fundraiser; it’s a community-wide effort aimed at enhancing our GAA facilities. We’re looking to improve various aspects, including spectator viewing, walkways, fencing, gym facilities, and even upgrading footpaths and roads. The idea is to create a better environment for everyone involved in our club and to foster a stronger sense of community spirit.

What inspired you to organize this event, and what makes it unique from others in the area?

We drew inspiration from similar initiatives we’ve seen in Kerry and Limerick. After the success of our previous event, “Strictly Come Dancing” in 2016, we wanted to embark on something new that would engage the entire community.

What sets the Oskars apart is that it’s the first of its kind in our area. It’s a fresh approach to fundraising that encourages participation from all corners of our community.

How did you engage volunteers to take part, and what impact do you hope this event will have on the community?

Engaging volunteers was crucial, and we utilised various channels such as online information sessions, social media promotions, and in-person sign-up events at An Culturlann. The response has been overwhelming, with many eager to get involved.

As for the impact, we’re hoping the Oskars will inject a new energy into our community. It’s been a tough few years for everyone, and this event provides an opportunity for people to come together, make new connections, and enjoy some well-deserved fun.

When and where will the Oskar night take place, and will there be any celebrities involved?

The Oskars will be held on the 26th of April at the Charleville Hotel, and tickets will be available for purchase at local outlets.

While we can’t reveal too much, there will indeed be guest judges adding to the excitement of the evening. We’re immensely grateful to our main sponsors, Newmarket Motors and Serosep, for their generous supportand to all who have donated to make this event successful.

The Oskars event organised by Newmarket GAA promises to be an unforgettable occasion, uniting the community in support of a common goal while paving the way for a brighter future for the club and its members.
