‘A FEAST of Children’s Drama’ was on the menu when pupils from Newmarket Boys School took to the stage in the Cultúrlann last week.

Sketches included ‘Nursery Crimes’, ‘Snow White and the Six Punks’, ‘Robbing Hood of the Island Wood’ and ‘Babbling Banshees’

Pupils taking part said: “An international youth study group based in Newmarket Boys School has discovered incidents of rampant violence in many well known fairy tales and nursery rhymes! This shocking exposé comes after many months of research and the groups findings were revealed at our show. It is expected that they will result in many long held beliefs being thrown out the window!”

Speaking to The Corkman after the show, school Principal Christine O’ Mahony said:

“A packed and very appreciative audience was treated to four different Playlets, in which every one of the school’s one hundred boys participated. The plays were directed by well known drama enthusiast Michael O’ Halloran in close cooperation with Teachers and other members of staff.”

“Rehearsals for the show started last October and have been ongoing since”

Like many primary schools in the country, Newmarket Boys’ School now caters for children from a variety of nationalities.

Christine O’ Mahony added: “We find that drama is a great medium for helping non Irish pupils to acclimatise and integrate with their Irish counterparts. I am most grateful for the tremendous cooperation given by pupils and parents alike and from Mossie Angland and his team at the Cultúrlann.

It was a great experience for our pupils to perform in such a beautiful venue for the local community. Thanks to everyone involved,” she continued.
