Funding approved for local groups in municipal district

- JACK JOY

MACROOM Municipal District councillors approved grant allocations from a fund of nearly €200,000 for local community groups at the most recent MD meeting on Thursday, March 28.

The funding of €197, 253 will help community, social and sports groups in the district to expand their facilities, purchase equipment or run events in the coming year.

Municipal District officer Marie O’Leary told councillors that the 2024 Community Fund (General Municipal Allocation), which is comprised of the Community Contract, Capital Fund Amenity Fund and Members Discretionary Fund (and Council Led Allocations), received 90 applications.

The MDO said that 22 of those applications were deemed ineligible, due to being duplicates – where a group had submitted more than one application or because of the three year rule, which means that “if you have received funding for three consecutive years you must break it for a year”.

The MD recommended 68 projects for approval by the council.

Mrs O’Leary put the recommended allocations to the councillors present, who each voted to approve them. Most of the elected members aired some concern over the three-year rule and Mrs O’Leary said that a possible amendment to it would be looked at ahead next year’s fund opening to applications.

After approval by councillors, 52 applications to the Amenity Fund were allocated grants from a combined €73,203.

Under the Capital Fund, nine applications were awarded funding that totaled €84,000.

Community Contract funding saw €29,000 allocated to 7 applicants.

The Members Discretionary Fund for this year is €5,000 while €6,000 was allocated for two council-led projects.

From the funds, three applications were ruled to be duplicates, 10 were ruled to be ineligible, eight were transferred to the Town Development Fund and one was withdrawn.
