Patrician Academu Student Council activities

-

Tuesday, March 19 was a special day for the Student Council of the Patrician Academy as the class representatives were presented with their badges.

The school is fortunate to have such a group of incredibly dedicated students who have worked tirelessly for the good of their classes and the school community.

Chairperson Christopher McSweeney also had his name put up in gold leaf on the Council’s honors board for showing leadership on every occasion.

The first ever Student Council Table Tennis tournament took place in February and March. A tremendous amount of work was put into the organisation of it by Mrs. Glynn and the Student Council which ensured that it ran smoothly from the beginning to end.

The student reps of first year did a fantastic job in collecting the money and supporting the teachers involved.

These reps are Thabit Boufaied, Alex Twohig, Adam Cremin, Rowen Moriarty, Brendan McSweeney and Fionn Martin.

Congratulations to Joshua Lane who just about beat Rowen Moriarty Murphy in the hotly contested final of the 1st Year Table Tennis competition. Huge numbers participated across the whole of 1st year but when it came down to the last 15 in the knock-out stages, Josh wasn’t to be beaten.

The second year student council representatives involved were Sam van der Molen, Killian McCarthy, David Lannon, Hugh Delaney, Joel Jacob, Alex Kelleher, Joe Barrow, and Alec Fitzpatrick. They ensured that the money was collected for the tournament and that the event ran smoothly.

Sixteen boys from the whole year group made it to the knock-outs and those sixteen were whittled down to two. Daniel Roche and Kevin O’Callaghan battled it out in a brilliant final. Congratulations to Kevin (a winner at the Malmo Open a few weeks ago) who eventually emerged victorious in front of a huge and loud crowd in the sports hall.

Shout out to the 2nd year Student Council reps for their organization.

The 3rd year reps Cillian Barry, Keelan Hill, Cillian Kelleher, Ciaran O’Donovan, Paul Kelly, Darragh Lehane, Paul Kelly, Harry Vu Ryan and George McCarthy organised the designing of the posters and put them up around the school. They also collected money and assisted in the running of their competition.

A fantastic final - congratulations to Sean O’Halloran who beat Jack Corcoran in an epic decider.

Sean proved difficult to beat when the winners of every year group as well as the staff winners played off.

Big shout out to the 3rd year Student Council reps who organised the event.

Well done to Eoin Barry as he continued his form from the recent school tour and is reigning TY Table Tennis Champion! He battled it out with Donough Barrow in a closely fought final.

Some genuinely outstanding table tennis matches took place as the 5th and 6th years battled it out to be the champion. Giacomo Bertagnolli (5th year) overcame stiff competition in the form of Oisin Noonan, Michael O’Meara & Liam Labat before eventually seeing off Barry Cotter in an entertaining final.

Congratulations to Conor Stokes and Conor Drinan who are in the teachers’ final. There were many competitive matches. Teachers who were narrowly beaten included Mr. Glynn, Mr. O’Carroll, Mr. O’Shea, Mr. Healy and Mrs. Ni Thuama. It was fantastic to see the huge crowd that turned up to watch the teachers.

There was great anticipation for the winner and a fantastic air of competitiveness in the week running up to to the final between the winner of the teachers and the students.

A special thanks must go to Mr. Glynn, Mr. Drinan, Mrs. Ni Thuama along with Philip Shaw from Munster Table Tennis and Cork Sports Partnership who dedicated their PE classes to teaching the students how to play table tennis and to ensure that nobody was left out of the proceedings.

Thanks also to fantastic caretaker David Buckley who sorted out the table tennis tables.

On the day of the finals there were a number of play-offs between those that qualified from each class in the year group.

As the tournament progressed the games became more intense. In the final it came down to a heated battle between Conor Stokes (teacher) with the eventual winner being student Kevin O’ Callaghan. Congratulations to Kevin, a well deserving winner.
