Eddie O’Shaughnessy vists Kolkata creche
The Cathy O’Shaughnessy Creche was set up six years ago to help the children from Chitpur Slum in Calcutta, (Koltata) India, for children from age two to six years of age. Eddy O’Shaughnessy is just back from a trip to visit the creche to observe the progress being made in the education of the children attending the facility.
In the Creche the children are looked after by two fully qualified teachers and one assistant, who look after their nutrition and health issues.
They also get their first introduction to education, once they reach the age of six years, when the children are then enrolled in State School.
This gives them the opportunity to get an education which will enable them to get out of the cycle of poverty into which, they were born.
These children will be the first generation of their family to get an education, which for them, is truly life changing.
This is made possible by the donations of so many people who have supported the Creche from the start.
Eddy visited the Creche recently to see first hand the work being done there, meet the teachers, the children, and some of the parents.
He also met some children who had graduated from the Creche and were now in State School, they were now working hard in school, some wanted to be teachers, others policewomen.
The parents he met said that they were very grateful that the children now had a way out of the slum, a privilege that they were denied.
You can sponsor a child in The Cathy O’Shaughnessy Creche for just €20 a month, this covers their food, uniform, and books, and helps to pay the teachers as well as the upkeep of the Creche.
If you wish to contribute to the creche, please contact any member of the O’Shaughnessy family for information on how to donate.
The O’Shaughnessy family would like to acknowledge the fantastic help of Nessan Kavanagh and his colleagues in The Hope Foundation for all their help in making this possible.
