GAA CLUB NEWS

BRIGHT SUNSHINE IN DONERAILE FOR DIVISION 3 GAME – In bright sunshine in Doneraile last Sunday, and we have not been able to say that too often yet in 2024, Killavullen and Doneraile played out a very entertaining and even game in Division 3 Football league.

Doneraile were first to score a point but then, their goal keeper, Dean O’Reilly pulled off two great saves in quick succession, from Billy Norris, when Billy, was one on one with the goalkeeper. Séamus O’Mahony scored our opening point, from open play in the seventh minute, after a good pass, from his brother, Ian. Doneraile went up the field and scored another point, and again were thankful to their goalkeeper, when he saved at the feet of Séamus, after quick exchanges of passes, between the forwards, put Séamus through.

Doneraile stretched out their lead with a further point, from their attacking centre back in the 17th minute, before Billy got one back for us, and we gained the equaliser, with a nice point, from Séamus, in the 21st minute. Séamus scored a free for us, to give us the lead in the 27th minute, after the lively and influential Owen Magner was fouled.

Doneraile brought the teams to the same score in the 28th minute, and we were grateful to our goal keeper Darragh when he bravely saved at the feet of a Doneraile attacker, in their next attack. Dominic Bolster scored the final point of the first period of a wide-open and lively game in the 30th minute, to leave us ahead at the break0-05 to 0-04.

Seán Palmer was reading the game very well, and attacking forward, and he scored a lovely point, after some neat wrap-a round’s in the opening minute of the second period. All of our good work was undone though, when we were slow to set up our defensive positions, from a Doneraile attacking free. They took the free quickly, and Darragh was powerless, as no less than three Doneraile attackers were inside their markers.

They worked the ball cleverly and finished emphatically to the net. Séamus led the fight back though, and scored in the seventh and eighth minute, the latter from a free, to push us ahead by a point again.

We introduced the exciting Evan Sheahan and Stephen Rea to the team, and that worked the oracle. Séamus got another point, from another free and Killavullen, spraying the ball around well, and into spaces, exposed Doneraile at the rear, and that opened up opportunities for willing runners, running off the shoulder. Séamus pushed over another point from play in the 18th minute, and Michael Walsh got a fine point for us, to extend our lead. 0-11 to 1-04 with 10 minutes remaining.

Doneraile got a score back, from the cultured right boot of Charlie Sweeney, from a dead ball situation. But Billy Norris, showing up well for the ball all day, got a lovely point, a point that emanated from good work in our defensive area, started by Ultan Cottey and Cian O’Connor. Doneraile stayed in the game with another point, but Séamus punished a close in indiscretion by a Doneraile defender against Stephen Rea. Doneraile got the last two scores from frees, again from Charlie but Killavullen had done enough, and secured the two points on offer, on the final score of 0-13 to 1-08.

Good showing from Killavullen’s younger players, with Thomas Fennell and Donal Cronin in the full back line, well marshalled in their duties by Pa in the middle, and ahead of them, the half back line, of Ultan, Seán and Cian were always eager to work, both forwards and backwards. Midfield with Colm and Dominic worked very hard, while the half-forward line, of Owen, Séamus and Shane played the positions exceptionally well.

Inside, Billy Norris, as always orchestrated that Ian and Mike into playing very well, by telling them, when to go, when to hold the positions, and when to spread out the play. Darragh was accomplished in goals, his kick outs were good, and accurate and fast, and he did nothing wrong.

Our substitutes, when introduced did not leave the team down, and overall, a very satisfactory work out, for our young but talented team, who no doubt, would have been in Mallow races the day before. Imagine what they could do, if they went to bed early. The referee, Peter Watson, left the game flow, and that added to the spectacle.

LOTTO – There was no winner of the lotto jackpot last Tuesday night when the jackpot on the night was, at €1,700. The numbers that were drawn were 2, 30 and 36. The draw on April 2 will be for €1,800. The winners of the lucky dips, last Tuesday evening were as follows: €50 – Clare Brennan (seller – Online Sales); €30 – John Beechinor (seller – John Beechinor); €20 – Hutton Bros. (seller – The Haven Bar). Purchase your ticket from any committee member or from our website – Killavullengaa.com. Thank you for your anticipated and ongoing support.

REBEL BOUNTY UPDATE – Last Thursday was the closing date for the Rebel Bounty Promotion, and it was heart-warming to see the Killavullen GAA numbers of participants in the draw increase again, to 271 for 2024.

This sales promotion is becoming a great source of funding for clubs. The number of participants rose from 27,332 in 2023, to a figure just shy of 30,000 for 2024. Following the huge success of Cork County Board Fundraiser, Rebels’ Bounty, over the past three years, the sales period for this year’s draw has again seen record numbers sign-up, with €3m raised in total.

An annual prize fund of €500,000 and a similar contribution to Cork County Board (including running costs), will result in just under €2m being accrued by Clubs.

Cork GAA secretary/CEO, Kevin O’Donovan said ‘We are thrilled to reach record numbers this year with record with sales of just under 30,000. We look forward to seeing our clubs reap the benefits of this investment in their facilities and coaching structures and we are grateful for the contribution to our own teams and activities also’.

Clubs such as Aghabollugue have used the funds to purchase more land for a third pitch in their case, and they would have colossal number of participants.

Killavullen had a winner in the March draw, in which Michael Relihan and Oliver Nagle won €250, a ticket that was sold by John Magner, from Bridgetown.

Killavullen GAA Club need to replenish funds after a big spend in 2023, on additional lights on Pitch two and a sanding program on both pitches., so in 2024, the emphasises will be on coaching, and putting some money aside for future capital programs.

FORTHCOMING FIXTURES – The 2024 Division 3 Hurling league will see Killavullen play Ballyhooley on Saturday, April 6, at 5 p.m. in Killavullen.

The 2024 Division 1 Hurling league will see Killavullen play Dromina on Sunday, April 7, at 2.30 p.m. in Dromina.

The emphasis then will be on Football, as Killavullen play Liscarroll – Churchtown Gaels at 6.45 p.m. in Killavullen, on April 9 – that is a Tuesday night, and is a catch up game, a fixture that was postponed earlier, in the calendar year due to inclement weather.

We do hope that the weather improves, as the program of games is congested, when the fixtures goes ahead as planned, and incredibly so, when games are not played. The Avondhu board cannot give extensions of time, else the dates earmarked for under-21 hurling suffers.

Do check our website for the best and most up to date fixture lists, as the times, and venues of matches can change, due to pitch availability.

MEMBERSHIP – With all games now up and running, it is imperative that all players have paid their 2024 membership. Remember, no membership paid, no insurance cover for you, in the event of an injury. Coaches also need to pay their membership, to be associated with the teams.

The club would be gracious if persons will pay the appropriate fee on the new Central GAA App – Foireann and select Cill An Mhuilinn as your club.

SPRING CLEAN – The spring clean collection will take place on next Saturday, April 6. Killavullen GAA Club Killavullen Ladies’ Football Club and Killavullen Parish ask that volunteers kindly return bags filled with roadside rubbish to the GAA grounds where they will be collected on Saturday evening. All bags need to be dropped off before 5 p.m. No bags will be accepted after this time.

Country Clean bags are to be used. Contact numbers are: John Magner 086 1591585, Marian O’Regan 085 2181887. We would really appreciate if people take the time to do their own roads. High visibility jackets are advised.

The link road, which is the road between Ballygown school and Rea’s Cross will not be cleaned this year, as this is the divert road, now that the N73 road is closed on the route between Mitchelstown and Mallow and traffic volumes on this small road, would make it too dangerous to have persons out of the road. Thanks to all for their anticipated help.
