‘Lights, camera & action’ awaiting on OsKars night

Tickets for the Newmarket GAA Night at the OsKars are expected to become hot property over the next week ahead of a Gala Night in the Clayton Silver Springs Hotel Convention Centre, Cork on Friday, April 26.

Club members and associates from Newmarket and beyond will re-enact some of the most iconic scenes from some wellloved movies and TV shows. Fittingly a red carpet event will showcase the movie clips and celebrity judges will decide on the OsKar award winners to a hosting co-ordinated by Kevin Rowe Events, the staging backed by main sponsors Newmarket Motors and Serosep Ltd.

Auditions met with an overwhelmi­ng response with close on 100 parts assigned to personnel drawn from Newmarket, Meelin, Freemount. Kilbrin, Dromtariff­e Kanturk and other areas where proceeds will raise funds for Newmarket GAA club developmen­t.

“We are thrilled with the response to date, the event is a great occasion for the club, the town and the locality.

“In the lead up to the OsKars, there has been numerous events feeding into the fundraiser ranging from car washes, scrap collection­s, health wellbeing events, fashion show, table quizzes, Munster GAA Preview to Grand National Sweepstake, concerts and much more”, said Organising Committee member John Murphy.

No better film to perform is the John B Keane classic “The Field” and adapted superbly to the big screen. Land is leased to the Bull McCabe (Charlie O’Connor) for several years but the widow (Mairéad Daly). who owns the field decides to sell to an American developer. The Bull becomes obsessed with keeping the land and will do anything to prevent the sale, the Newmarket segment is sponsored by Supervalu.

Sister Act sponsored by Ducon Concrete is full of entertainm­ent as singer Deloris (Soty Guerin) sees her mobster beau, Vince (Con Goggin), commit murder, she is relocated for her protection. Set up in the guise of a nun in a California convent, Deloris proceeds to upend the quiet lives of the resident sisters

Forrest Gump backed by Hannons’ Mace remains as one of the classics, Forrest played by Michael Kenneally holds an IQ of 75 but his life is far from restricted.

The Snapper sponsored by Áth Trasna Medical Centre is the highly popular film based on the novel by Roddy Doyle, about the Curley family and their complicate­d domestic adventures. Honor O’Flynn plays Sharon, Jimmy O’Keeffe is the embarrasse­d Georgie Burgess.

Relating to Irish history, the film Michael Collins sponsored by Newmarket Credit Union is a classic detailing the turbulent life of the great revolution­ary, soldier and politician. Lead role is played by Nicky Barrett, Maura Foley as Kitty Kiernan.

The popular Derry Girls will be re-created with sponsorshi­p from Munters Corp.

Man About Dog sees three luckless friends attempt to pay off a gambling debt with the help of a greyhound. Mo Chara (Shane McAulliffe) owes £50,000 to a Belfast bookie, and with the help of his mates `Cerebral’ Palsy (Ben Newman) and Scud Murphy (John O’Callaghan), decides to head south in the hope of seeing a man about a dog. Tickets for the Newmarket GAA Night at the OsKars are available from Organising members. Doors at the Clayton Hotel Silver Springs Convention Centre on Friday, April 26 open at 7.30pm.
