On behalf of the Irish Hospice Foundation, Regina Glynn, Mary Magner and Bridget Barton would like to thank the people of Mallow and surrounding areas for their generous support for the Irish Hospice Collection on Saturday, March 9 2024.

The donations will ensure that the Nurses for Night Care Service will be provided for families living with cancer for the forthcoming year.

The three ladies were overwhelmed by the generosity of the people of Mallow, their friends and families near and far who donated on-line and the huge number of volunteers who came out on the day to assist them.

Bridget would especially like to mention the pupils and staff of St. Anne’s Primary School in Charleville who have given her amazing support in her endeavours for the Irish Hospice.

The three cyclists are looking forward to taking on the challenge of cycling across southern France from the Atlantic Ocean to the Mediterranean Sea. The distance is approximately 600 km. The route passes along the foothills of the Pyrenees, stopping at the pilgrimage town of Lourdes.

Then the girls will attempt to tackle the mighty Tourmalet, one of the original climbs of the Tour de France, scaling to a height of 2,115 metres. They are not sure whether they will make it, but they are determined in their mission to support the Nurses for Night Care service.

The training has already started. They are attending spinning classes and getting on the road at weekends. The distance, duration and intensity will increase as the weeks progress. They will keep you informed as to how they are getting on.

You can track their progress on social media and perhaps join them for a spin.

The Irish Hospice sponsored cycle challenge is the largest and longest standing fundraising event for much needed funds for the Night Nurse Service. Since it was established in 2009, the event has raised over €2.2 million, thousands of families have been cared for by the Nurses as they provide over 2,000 nights of care every year.

It is a free, at-home night nursing service for patients diagnosed with cancer. The nurses travel to patients’ homes to provide professional care, physical, emotional, social and spiritual support for the final nights of a patient’s life.

They also bring immense comfort and relief and provide important respite and reassurance to families and relatives.
