Duhallow Junior A Hurling League makes a welcome return

- John Tarrant

WITH favourable weather on the cards, the Twohigs Supervalu Duhallow Junior A Hurling League returns with three games on the programme. Inclement weather over the past six weeks forced a series of postponements with a number of the teams making a belated seasonal debut this weekend.

League and championship holders Newmarket welcome Millstreet on Friday evening after easily overcoming Banteer in their previous outing.

Victory was achieved thanks to an impressive team performance, Newmarket operated a fast and fluent brand of hurling with Jack O’Connor, Alan Ryan, Conor O’Keeffe and Barry O’Connor laying down a marker from the outset.

This is Millstreet’s initial outing to the season, facing the double champions is a difficult task, the visitors keen for a lift off given the frustrating run of postponements.

The same applies to Kilbrin and Castlemagner, without action but meetings between the sides generate competitive fare.

Banteer are home to a Dromtariffe side, also making their first outing.

The hosts will seek an improvement from a defeat to Newmarket where only Alan Kearney and Luke Philpott got on the scoreboard.

With uncertainty on current form in teams, it makes for an interesting weekend where all sides will welcome the opportunity to sharpen up on hurling skills.

From the Red FM County Hurling League Division 1, Kanturk are away to Ballincollig on Friday, Meelin also on the road to Kinsale in Division 7 on Sunday.

Duhallow GAA Golf Classic

A GAA Golf Classic fundraiser in aid of Duhallow GAA takes place in Kanturk Golf Club on Friday/Saturday, May 26/27. The cost for a team of three to enter is €180 and there are some great prizes and a three course meal on offer.

There are opportunities for businesses and individuals to sponsor a tee box at €50 each.

Board Chairman Steven Lynch outlined both Duhallow Senior Hurling and Football teams are looking forward to their respective upcoming County Senior Championships and the Golf hosting is a significant boost.

“Previously, the Classic had generated great enthusiasm within the division prior to participating in both county senior championships. We hope that the success of last season’s event will continue, the Golf Classic is being organised to help the Duhallow Board with the substantial team preparations and expenses involved,” he said

Timesheets are available on a first come, first served basis, and with daylight extending at this time of the year, there are ample slots for teams.
