Banteer hit by fifth water outage in last six months
A LOCAL COMMUNITY COUNCIL MEMBER HAS CALLED FOR WORKS ON A PLANNED RESERVOIR TO SERVE THE AREA TO BE BROUGHT FORWARD
Banteer experienced a fifth water outage in the last six months on Monday, April 22, with plans for a new reservoir to be installed for the area “not going anywhere fast”.
A representative of the Banteer-Lyre-Nadd & Districts Community Council told The Corkman that the water outage occurred at roughly 7am on Monday morning and ended at approximately 11am.
They said that the water outage was the fifth to occur in the region since November, and called for Uisce Éireann to prioritise works it has planned for the local water system, which would see a project to provide treated water storage facilities at Banteer, Derry and Creggane constructed in 2026 and be completed in 2027.
“What we want really, the long-term plan is to up it on the schedule and bring it forward,” the spokesperson said.
“We’ve put pressure on through our public reps, but it doesn’t seem to be going anywhere fast.”
They added that two short-term options to prevent or minimise future water outages could also be implemented while waiting for the water storage facilities to be completed.
One option would see extra storage tanks added to the Derry Reservoir and, with the help of an ESB connection, a new pump installed on the Nadd road to provide a better water supply to Banteer.
Another option would be to add a pump connection from Banteer to the junction that links the Newmarket-Kanturk water supply, according to the spokesperson.
