Castlelyons too strong for Mallow in Division 3

- REFEREE: Brian Murphy (Carrigtwohill) COUNTY HURLING LEAGUE DIVISION 3

Castlelyons 0-22 Mallow 0-13

CASTLELYONS ran out worthy winners over Mallow when they clashed in the Red FM County Division 3 Hurling League at Castlelyons.

The opening stages saw the Imokilly outfit aided by the breeze start in a very determined manner with a number of their huge clearances out of their backline causing many problems to the entire Mallow backline.

Early pressure saw Brian O’Donovan (4), Leon Doocey (2), James Kearney and Ronan Fenton score some fine points that helped them into a 0-8 to 0-2 advantage by the 12th minute – the Mallow points by Liam Malone and Billy Murphy.

By the end of the first quarter two more points for the Avondhu side by Simon Leneghan and Liam Malone reduced the margin to four points. However Castlelyons continued to show the greater urgency. In the 19th minute a great solo run out by Jamie O’Leary from the full back line set up Conor McCarthy who split the posts with a long range effort.

Moments later a Mallow clearance that went astray was picked up by James Kearney who pointed. Brian O’Donovan followed with a point before Mallow came close to a goal scoring opportunity when Daniel Sheehan was denied by a fine save by the Castlelyons keeper Jack Barry.

At the other end Brian O’Donovan (2), Ronan Fenton and Jack Barry landed points for last year’s Cork and Munster Intermediate kingpins as they held a commanding 0-15 to 0-6 lead at the interval.

On the resumption Mallow showed signs of an early revival when Simon Leneghan (2) and Sean Hayes reeled off rapid points. However Mallow found it hard to reduce the deficit any further with the home side controlling matters again in this half.

Cees Kouwenbery and Paul Lyons traded a point by the midway stage with the winners moving double scores in front by the 52nd minute 0-20 to 0-10.

Mallow battled away in the closing stages with Pa Healy, Paul Lyons and Mark Tobin having points before the end but there was no denying Castlelyons their convincing victory with Alan Fenton and Jack Kenny also on target with a point each as they emerged winners by a nine point margin.
