14 per cent rise in the number of candidates contesting Cork locals

122 CANDIDATES OFFICIALLY NOMINATED ACROSS THE TEN ELECTORAL DIVISIONS OF THE COUNTY - UP 14 PER CENT FROM THE FIGURE OF LOCAL ELECTIONS ‘19

122 candidates have been officially nominated across the ten local electoral areas for Cork County Council.

This figure represents a 14% increase on the number of candidates who stood for election in 2019.

The number of female candidates who have put their names forward has increased by more than a third with 41 candidates officially nominated.

12 parties are represented with 22 non-party candidates.

Independent Ireland, The Irish People, Ireland First, and Glór – Voice of the People have nominated candidates for the first time.

Fine Gael currently has 19 outgoing councillors in Cork County Council and Fianna Fáil has 17 councillors.

There are 13 Independent councillors, two councillors for the Social Democrats and the Labour Party respectively, one Green Party councillor and one Independent Ireland councillor.

Polling for the upcoming local elections will take place on Friday, June 7 with 55 members set to be elected.

Housing is one of the main issues coming up on the doorsteps of Cork County.

Roads is also a big issue for constituents who are disappointed with the lack of annual funding allocated to Cork County.

Other topical issues coming up are immigration, broadband, Irish Water, and the lack of public transport services.
