Castlelmagner team lands top prize at Kilbrin Golf Classic

- BY JOHN TARRANT

THE annual Kilbrin golf Classic ensured a hive of activity on the popular Kanturk course.

An impressive turnout weighed in to support the staging and favourable weather added to the enjoyment of the occasion.

“Participating teams helped Kilbrin GAA to further improve club development and add amenities for the community. The staging depended on the generosity of business, sponsors, friends and supporters of the club to support us in our fundraising activities and we appreciate the support”, said club Secretary Jennifer Casey.

Development at the complex has continued over the past 40 years, and the arrival of the late Fr Finbarr Kelleher coincided with the rebirth of Kilbrin GAA Club in the 1970s. In the early 2000s, plans began for a new clubhouse, the ground floor contains two dressing rooms, toilets, referee’s room, kitchen and the Dr Croke memorial room. Upstairs has a meeting room and gym, the gym kitted out, work at the Complex financed through local fund-raising and grants received from the Sports Capital Programme, Cork County Council and the GAA at Duhallow, county and provincial level.

“A big thank you is due to everybody who contributed to the great success of the day both from an enjoyment and financial point of view, especially the participating teams and sponsors,” said Jennifer.

Main sponsors included Burton’s Topline, Kanturk; Ducon Concrete, Alum Fit, Kilbrin; Newmarket Motors and many others.

Taking first place was a Castlemagner GAA team of Kevin Taylor, Denis O’Connell and John Duggan with Ger Lane, Bill Ducey and Tim O’Riordan from the Alley Bar, Kanturk in runner up position.

Best Gross went to the Damien Crowley team of John O’Callaghan, John Scanlon and Colm O’Connor. Taking third were a Duhallow GAA trio of Dan Dennehy, Billy Hickey and Patrick Ryan with Sean McSweeney, Ben Newman and Jordan Corkery in fourth place.

Fifth position belonged to the Thoughts that Count team of Brian Aherne, Michael Dennehy and Donie Kiely with Vincent Hayes joined by Donncha Kenneally and Tracey Cremin taking 6th prize.
