Eriksson tops Tan’s wish-list

- By Joe Bernstein

THE fight over Malky Mackay’s future at Cardiff turned ugly last night, with fans heaping abuse on the club’s owner Vincent Tan and managers’ chief Richard Bevan offering his support for the Scot ahead of an anticipated £2million compensation battle.

Tan, who saw Cardiff beaten 3-1 by Liverpool, is preparing to axe Mackay in the next 48 hours, with former England boss Sven Goran Eriksson one possible candidate to replace him.

‘Whatever we do, we will do for the good of Cardiff,’ said Tan, who was the target of ‘We want Vincent out’ chants from the Cardiff fans.

A few yards away, Bevan, was present in a show of support for the under-fire Mackay. The manager was clearly emotional after a testing week in which he received an email from Tan saying he should resign or be sacked.

‘I’m a very proud man,’ said Mackay. ‘The backing of the supporters has been immense for me and the team. To also get applauded by Liverpool fans didn’t surprise me, they are a class act. It was very humbling.

‘I will continue to work if it is anything to do with me. It is crystal clear I won’t be resigning as manager of the football club. I couldn’t look in the mirror otherwise.

‘But I think my future is something you have to ask other people. My job is to prepare the team, and that is what I have been doing properly. Results in the main show that.’

It’s believed Tan has made contact with former England and Manchester City manager Eriksson, who is currently working in China.
