Mother suspected of killing her son with doses of salt
DURING the last days of fiveyear-old Garnett Spears’ life, doctors suspected something about his story just didn’t fit.
The little boy was airlifted to Maria Fareri Children’s Hospital outside New York in January after suffering intense abdominal pains from a suspected stomach virus.
The boy’s mother Lacey Spears, 26, was by his side. According to witnesses, a doctor told Ms Spears that it was ‘metabolically impossible’ for Garnett’s body to have such high sodium levels, adding: ‘Something isn’t right.’
Spears – who obsessively blogged about little Garnett’s constant health problems – is expected to be charged and could potentially face either murder, negligent homicide or manslaughter charges.
She has not been charged and denies doing anything wrong.
The little boy’s condition worsened and he died four days later with what appeared to be dangerously high amounts of sodium in his system – leading investigators to question whether Garnett was deliberately given the salt.
The little boy’s death was ruled a homicide by a medical examiner in March.
One anonymous source said: ‘Her behaviour was just weird in the hospital. It was not the behaviour of a grieving mother. She was more concerned about... what people were saying on Facebook.’
Others said they were disturbed to see her snapping pictures of her desperately ill son to post online.
