Man, 42, arrested following baseball bat death

- By Ben Haugh

THIS is the young man who died tragically after being hit over the head with a baseball bat during an altercation in Naas on Friday.

The 20-year-old man has been named locally as Joseph Dunne, from Athy, Co. Kildare.

Mr Dunne, known as JoJo to his friends, grew up in Newbridge but moved to Athy recently.

The tragic incident occurred at about 10.20pm on Friday at Harbour View in Naas.

A 42-year-old man is being questioned in connection with the alleged assault.

Local sources explained that Mr Dunne was among a group of friends who were on their way to a nearby nightclub.

While travelling through Harbour View, it is believed that the alarm of a local resident’s van was set off, according to locals.

The resident, understood to be originally from eastern Europe, came out of his house and got involved in an altercation with the passing group.

Mr Dunne was struck over the head with a baseball bat during the argument.

He was taken to the nearby Naas General Hospital but was later pronounced dead.

The entire street remained cordoned off by gardaí yesterday after a forensic team inspected the area at around 1pm.

A French restaurant, Vie de Châteaux, is located very close to where the incident took place.

It was open at the time of the incident. It is understood that all staff and customers were interviewed as part of the garda investigation. The owner of the restaurant, who asked not to be named, said: ‘I didn’t see anything and neither did my staff.

‘But some of our customers who were sitting on the terrace last night saw some of the incident,’ he said.

There is a CCTV camera on a tall pole on the street which suggests that gardaí could have a video of the incident.
