My magical childhood growing up with Grace

- By Caroline Graham

TO THE world she was the ice-cool Hollywood star turned fairytale princess. But, in private, Princess Grace loved peanut-butter sandwiches, bingo… and dancing the twist.

Grace Kelly’s ‘true’ character is revealed for the first time by her goddaughter Grace Dale, 47. The princess was friends with Ms Dale’s parents, Joan and Martin Dale, who was an adviser to Rainier.

‘My mother and Grace had a 25-year friendship,’ Ms Dale explained from her home in Canada. ‘She was wonderfully down-to-earth. Her favourite food was peanut-butter sandwiches, and she loved playing bingo.’

Ms Dale, who called the princess ‘Aunt Grace’ and who has written a book with her mother about their friendship, said she and her two brothers grew up with the Rainier children, Caroline, Albert and Stephanie. ‘We were always in and out of each other’s houses. It was an extraordinary childhood.’ CloSe: Grace Kelly with young Grace on her 13th birthday
