Buckley’s a class act
THERE was great dignity displayed by Carthage Buckley in the build-up to Wicklow hosting Laois today. The clash summoned memories of the Battle of Aughrim 28 years ago, which Buckley refereed.
He dismissed four men that day, but it has become confused in some accounts with another alleged incident in Wicklow when a referee was flung into the boot of a car by enraged half-wits after a club match. Behind every light-hearted account of a shemozzle is a referee like Buckley, tangled up in a trauma that is not of their making.
