‘Sky deal showed incredible foresight’

DAVY FITZG FITZGERALD believes the GAA’s deal to allow a Sky Sports to broadcast hurling and football matches is a positive step which can only be good fo for Ireland’s national sports.

‘I will always argue the case that I’d like to see so many games here freeto-view, no ma matter what the story is. That goes with without saying. But let’s start thinking a about the bigger picture, too,’ sa said Fitzgerald.

‘When I’m at home, I watch American football, Australian Rules football. Why not allow other countries to watch our games? Why not broaden the base of the GAA and take advantage of that? It could create serious revenue, it could create more jobs. To me, it’s a no-brainer.

‘It showed unbelievable foresight by [director general] Páraic Duffy. He’s taken enough stick. Instead of knocking him, we need to appreciate the work that him and his people are doing. I think it’s a good move.’
