John Harvey says this will be his final novel, which is a shame as it’s his finest in years. DI Resnick is semi-retired but then a case emerges from his past. The body of Jenny Hardwick, one of the most militant of wives during the miners’ strike, is found. Resnick is one of the few policemen left who served during the strike, so he’s called in to investigate. This is a troubling tale that succeeds not only as a murder mystery but as a memorial to an epic struggle that pitted neighbour against neighbour.
