1990: Makes his profession­al debut for Nottingham Forest. 1993: Signs for Manchester United for British record of £3.75m. 1994: Wins league and FA Cup and plays in World Cup. 1997: Keane is named captain at Old Trafford. 1999: Misses Champions League final because of suspension. 2002: Ireland qualify for the World Cup but rows with manager Mick McCarthy in Saipan mean he leaves the squad. 2005: Departs United in acrimoniou­s circumstan­ces. 2006: Joins Celtic in January but retires six months later and eventually goes into management with Sunderland.

2008: Resigns having gained promotion to Premier League in 2007 and then keeping them up the following season.

2009: Appointed Ipswich Town boss but is sacked after 20 months in charge.

2013: Becomes Martin O’Neill’s No 2 with Ireland.
