Alf recovered to lead us to glory

-

ENGLAND arrived in Brazil as 3-1 favourites to win the 1950 World Cup only to suffer a shock defeat at the hands of 500-1 outsiders USA. So shocking was the news back home that some newspapers assumed the scoreline had been wrongly transmitted and ran a 10-0 scoreline in favour of England. Sixteen years later, with a veteran of the USA loss, Alf Ramsey, in charge of the team, England went on to lift the Jules Rimet trophy at Wembley. These players who featured in the Belo Horizonte humiliation went on to win almost 400 caps between them.
