Gaetjens mystery

THE fate of the man who scored the USA’s winning goal remains unconfirmed although he was almost certainly murdered in murky circumstances. He returned to his native Haiti, where some of his relatives were involved in an opposition movement to president Francois ‘Papa Doc’ Duvalier. He was arrested by the state secret police in July 1964 and was never seen again, presumed executed. ‘The story we all heard was he was shot but his body was never found,’ said team-mate Walter Bahr.
