Open draw throws up a tricky bout for Taylor against Brugger
KATIE TAYLOR begins her challenge for a sixth successive European crown today, with the Olympic champion set to face Switzerland’s Sandra Brugger in her opening bout in Bucharest.
The Bray lightweight is one of two Irish boxers in action at the Women’s European Championships with Belfast bantamweight Michaela Walsh taking on Helina Bruyevigh of Belarus.
The open draw has thrown up a tasty opener for Taylor as she defeated Brugger in the 2007 final.
Meanwhile, Olympic rival Sofya Ochigava will also be in action, taking on Maria Jassen of the Netherlands.
Welterweight Claire Grace will fight tomorrow, against Kara Guluzar, while featherweight Joanna Lambe and flyweight Ceire Smith complete the five-strong Irish team and will compete in their opening contests on Tuesday.
