That farmstead feel…

Rural home with outhouses, flower and veg gardens has the good life written all over it

-

The façade of this beautifully refurbished five-bed is as close to a traditional Irish farmhouse as you can get. The familiar design of central porch flanked on either side and above by identical sash windows, is replicated across the country. The plain quoins down the side walls and edging the windows are the only hint of decoration. These were utilitarian homes, designed as the heart of the farm, their very simplicity giving them a charming quality.

Cleighran dates to the early

1880s and was a prominent working farm of 99 acres. Between 2006 and 2007 the house was totally renovated and is beautifully presented with the old rooms reworked to provide 200sq.m of living space set in an easy-to-live-in layout decorated in contemporary colours that bring light and a great sense of style to the interior.

The property is now set on a circa 2.7-acre site with many mature trees and sits well back from the road, with two old stone pillars giving way to a 100-metre avenue. Most of the land is to the front and north side of the house, ideal for a pony.

On the south side of the house, the owners have created a magnificent walled garden with flower beds and borders, a polytunnel, glasshouse and two lawns. It’s ideal for anyone interested in growing their own veg and maintaining a certain level of self sufficiency.

Behind, there is a private courtyard surrounded by traditional stone stables and outbuildings

which can be further renovated for alternative uses.

The house was re-roofed, drylined, insulated, rewired, it has a new oil-fired heating system combined with a 20kw Stratford Ecoboiler wood burning stove, all windows are double glazed, there is solid French oak flooring in all the living areas in the main house while laminate flooring is used in the converted stables. It has a C3 BER, which isn’t bad at all for a building of this age and style.

The porch leads into the hallway with a cosy living room on the left with feature gas fireplace. The dining room on the right has a wood-burning stove that heats the house and hot water supply. It opens into the large kitchen with a Rangemaster cooker, integrated appliances and a tiled floor. French doors take you into the pretty courtyard at the back.

There’s also a back entrance with cloakroom and wc. The utility room and converted stables can be accessed from the front hallway. In the stables is a large reception room and a double bedroom with en-suite bathroom.

The original staircase takes you to the four pretty bedrooms upstairs and family bathroom with roll-top bath and shower.

The house is between Ballintogher and Dromahair where there are supermarkets, shops, primary schools, restaurants and pubs. Sligo is a 15-minute drive away, while Knock Airport is about 50 minutes from the property.
