Sir Daniel shares joy with his family

- By Niamh Walsh

ACTOR Daniel Day-Lewis is notoriously private. But it seems having a social media-loving teenage son in the house may have mellowed the star.

Day-Lewis, 57, was knighted by Prince William during a ceremony at Buckingham Palace on Friday in recognition of the triple Oscar winner’s services to acting.

And while most of the official pictures of the occasion depicted the actor looking sombre, his son Gabriel chose to post a picture of his father in a much more relaxed and natural pose celebrating his achievement with his beaming family.

‘Buckingham selfie! What an amazing day spent with beautiful people. I’m so proud of you for your knighthood dad, as is your country. You never cease to make me proud,’ Gabriel posted on his Instagram page.

It’s not the first time Day-Lewis has gone on one knee to accept an honour from a member of the royal family.

In 2007, Helen Mirren won the Best Actress Oscar for her portrayal of Queen Elizabeth in The Queen. By traditional, therefore, in 2008, she presented the Best Actor award to Day-Lewis for his role in There Will Be Blood.

A mischievous Day-Lewis knelt before Mirren and she tapped him on each shoulder with the Oscar statuette, at which point he joked: ‘That’s the closest I’ll come to ever getting a knighthood.’

However, he is thrilled at the honour and said: ‘I’m entirely amazed and utterly delighted in equal measure.’

Day-Lewis is the only actor to have won three Best Actor

‘Amazed and delighted in equal measure’

Oscars: My Left Foot (1989); There Will Be Blood (2007) and Lincoln (2012).

However, he rarely makes public appearances and shuns the limelight.

But his eldest son Gabriel does not share his reservations.

One of his online tributes reads: ‘It was an honour to be at your heels for the entirety of your success. You inspire me not only as an artist but as a man. Though I am sure the future holds only the best for you, you have done your family more proud than you will ever know.’
