Lily Allen snubbed Geldof over his ‘smug’ Band Aid

- By Chris Hastings

LILY Allen has revealed that she refused to sing on the new Band Aid 30 record because she thought the project was ‘smug’ and selfserving.

In an outspoken interview in the Irish Mail on Sunday’s More magazine today, the 29-year-old star says she would rather donate money to charity than sign up to what she brands the ‘success club’ of celebrities.

‘I got an email asking me to do it,’ she says. ‘It’s difficult to give an explanation of why I didn’t do it without sounding like a complete ****.

‘I prefer to do my charitable bit by donating actual money and not being lumped in with a bunch of people like that.

‘It’s like the success club and I’m not really in that club.

‘I don’t think I’m above it all – I’m way below it. But there’s something a bit smug about it.’

Allen is conspicuously absent from the fourth incarnation of Do They Know It’s Christmas, which features contributions from fellow chart toppers Ed Sheeran, Chris Martin and One Direction and is on course to top the singles chart today.

The singer, is the first star to reveal that they turned down a chance to sing on the charity track.

Last week, Band Aid supremo Sir Bob Geldof let slip that Skyfall singer Adele had refused to return his calls.

Famously outspoken, Allen has previously described Geldof as a ‘sanctimonious prat’.

But the singer says she is not worried about angering the Boomtown Rats singer once again.

She says: ‘I don’t care if Bob’s got the hump with me. I actually don’t mind Bob. He doesn’t give a **** and he’s grumpy like me.’
