YOUR RIGHTS AS A CONSUMER
Considering the fact that we will spend in the next few weeks, it’s surprising how few people know their consumer rights.
As far as buying an item in store goes, it should:
Be as described on the packaging Do what it’s meant to do Be of decent quality Last a reasonable amount of time
If it is not, you are entitled to a repair, replacement or refund, usually in that order. So it’s a good idea to check if that remote control tank actually works (and has batteries) before it goes under the tree. Things get a
bit more complicated online.
If you buy from an EUbased online company, you’re protected by the same rights as shop-bought goods but with the added protection of the Distance Selling directive which allows you 14 days to return the product.
You may have to pay for postage if you are returning it because you changed your mind, but if the item is faulty, then you don’t have to pay to return it.
If you buy from a website within the EU, the item should be delivered within 30 days unless you agree otherwise.
Remember to always buy from a reputable website. And just because a web address ends in ‘.ie’ does not mean the site is based in Ireland.
