Naked man who caused havoc over Supermac’s snack box is at it again

- By Debbie McCann

A MAN who stripped down to his boxer shorts and became aggressive after a prison officer brought him chicken nuggets instead of a snack box was at the centre of another drama in a courthouse this week.

Eddie O’Sullivan became ‘violent and agitated’ this week after another prisoner allegedly tried to pass him an illegal substance in a courthouse.

It took seven gardaí and prison officers to restrain the prisoner. He was removed from a holding cell in Ennis District Court to a prison van but a prison officer was injured in the disturbance.

O’Sullivan, 25, with addresses at Parkview Apartments, Limerick, and John Street, Limerick, was dubbed the ‘naked thief’ after he appeared before Judge Carroll Moran in his underwear and socks in the summer.

The accused’s appearance in court in May was delayed because, as a prison officer informed the judge, he had taken off all his clothes and was almost naked in the holding cell below the court.

However, Judge Moran said that O’Sullivan should be brought up to the courtroom. ‘We are all grown-ups here and photography is forbidden in the courtroom,’ he said.

O’Sullivan appeared before Judge Moran and apologised for his state of undress. His case was adjourned until later that day and the judge told him to ‘put some clothes on’.

However, when the court recessed for lunch, O’Sullivan caused mayhem in the holding cells when a prison officer brought him chicken nuggets instead of the Supermac’s snack box he had apparently asked for.

This week’s disturbance was apparently sparked by another prisoner allegedly passing him an illegal substance in court.

A prison officer told Ennis District Court that O’Sullivan – who has more than 120 previous convictions – became ‘agitated and violent’ as a result.

He was removed to a prison van and appeared later in court after promising to behave.

He was due to be sentenced after pleading guilty to the theft of a wallet, cash and bus card from a partially paralysed man.

Judge Gerald Keys said it would be ‘grossly unfair’ to impose a sentence without first reading a probation report, which is not yet before the court.

He remanded O’Sullivan in custody to appear again in January.
