Inspiring themes to make your home a Christmas cracker

Turn your home into a real Christmas cracker with one of these show-stopping themes

- KIM WILLOUGHBY

D ecember 1 is almost upon us and once the Christmas season has officially started it is perfectly acceptable to bust out the tinsel and adorn everything in sight. But first you need a strategy.

Christmas colour schemes are serious business, you see, and each year the holiday industry dreams up new trends, themes and combos that are ‘essential’ to wow our guests.

Yes, I’m afraid your 20-year-old tinsel may not cut it any more and perhaps it is time to break out of the red-and-green rut and up your festive décor game. From bold blues and luxurious purples to candy-coloured interior delights, here are five themes topping the holiday charts.

The Christmas tree is the showpiece of the season, so even if you don’t generally embrace bold colour in you home, this is the one time you can go overboard and try them out.

SUGARY PASTELS

Pink has always been the fashionista’s go-to Christmas tree colour (for proof, check out Victoria Beckham posing by her 2013 sparkler on Instagram). This year sugary pastel decorations in ice-cream pinks, dusty blues and mint greens will make your tree good enough to eat. Fairy lights and silver or frosted tinsel are the perfect companions.

PERFECTLY NATURAL

Celebrate the season with a nature-inspired Christmas tree – ideally a real tree or a forest branch sprayed with snow or one of the wooden crafted trees that are proving popular. Mix pine cones, leaves and birds through the branches, a few metallic elements to add sparkle, and hang a wild berry wreath on the door. This look fits perfectly with the pared back Scandinavian log cabin vibe where wooden accessories, fur, woolly cushions, throws and rugs set the mood. A deer’s head or antlers won’t go astray either.

ALL THAT GLITTERS

They stole the show in 2014 homewares, so it’s no surprise that mixed metallics are foremost on the Christmas ‘trend radar’ this year. Think shiny coppers, beautiful bronzes, sparkling silvers and glittering golds – this is all out vintage festive glamour.

Dress the tree with rich shades of champagne, rose gold and silver, using patterned and embossed baubles or pretty fabric poinsettias and silk ribbon bow ties.

Add a cosy glow with tea lights or spectacular free-standing candelabras or let giant light-up letters shine on.
