Candidate’s flash photography wins
IRISH Mail on Sunday photographer Tom Honan scooped up an award for this picture of Nadine Meisonnave having a Marilyn Monroe moment during the local elections last year.
Mr Honan’s photo of the Fine Gael candidate was a third-place winner in the politics category of the Press Photographer of the Year Awards this week.
The Dublin photographer’s picture, titled Political Whirlwind, captured Ms Meisonnave struggling to keep her skirt under control during high winds at the Dublin Docklands Festival last May.
Last night, Mr Honan said he was ‘delighted’ with the win.
‘Politicians are normally very guarded and this was a rare unguarded moment so I was glad to capture it.
‘The photo was published that day by the MoS, which is good because sometimes the photos that win awards aren’t actually used in the paper because they are a bit too arty,’ he said.
This is the fourth year on the trot that Mr Honan has picked up an award at the annual ceremony. Irish Times photographer Alan Betson was named Press Photographer of the Year at the ceremony on Friday.
President Michael D Higgins presented the award to Mr Betson, who also won in 1997 and 2004.
The 110 shortlisted prints will be on display in the Ballsbridge Hotel until tomorrow, before moving to the library at the
RDS for two weeks.
