Edge of the square to the ballot box
THERE was a bit of surprise when it was revealed that former Laois manager Justin McNulty looks set to stand for the SDLP in May’s Westminster elections
However, it is the second time in less than a year that the nationalist party has turned to the GAA, as it attempts to rebuild itself in Northern Ireland.
The former Down and Fermanagh footballer Shane King stood for the SDLP in local elections for the Newry and Mourne district, although he was eliminated at the fifth count.
All-Ireland winner McNulty will have a huge profile in South Armagh and he will need it as Sinn Féin had a majority of over 8,000 votes in Newry and Armagh at the last election.
