The vital secrets to impressive power dressing, by Ireland’s top couture guru

- By Louise Kennedy

FOR a woman in business or in a high-profile position, I believe there are some easy style guidelines to follow. Her wardrobe should include a well tailored, body-fitting jacket. If lined in a stretch silk lining – the ultimate business-wear luxury– it is hard to revert to a non-stretch acetate lining. Midnight blue and black solid colours are flattering and can be worn with any solid colour or printed top. Wearing a cami is not advisable as it means you won’t be able to remove the jacket.

The jacket can be worn with slim, tapered, lined trousers and/or pencil skirt to create a number of different looks.

Skirts should be worn with elegant stilettos and Capri trousers can be worn slightly cropped with slingback kitten heels for a very chic look.

Well tailored trousers are always great for power dressing. Palazzos look amazing with a crisp, white cotton, fitted shirt and a belt can enhance a feminine silhouette.

A fitted, mono colour, silk-lined dress is always very smart, with either short or bracelet length sleeve.

When possible, it is worth investing in a luxury, high quality fabric in suiting. It will hold its shape and quality for many years. Cleavage, I’m afraid, is always a no-no – less flesh is more.

Any garment that is too tightly fitted is not just unflattering but also uncomfortable. Make up should always be ‘natural’ and nails kept manicured to give an overall well groomed appearance. Jewellery should be discreet so as not to distract.

Finally, for every important occasion, a good blow dry will crown the overall look of a woman in charge.
