Lenny’s ‘free plastic surgery’ Oscar offer

- By Ben Haugh

BEING nominated for an Oscar is a great moment for any director as it opens up so many doors.

And Dublin director Lenny Abrahamson has revealed it is also a great way to get free plastic surgery.

The 49-year-old filmmaker, whose film Room was nominated for four Oscars, has spoken out about some of the bizarre gifts that are handed out to nominees.

The luxurious goodie bags are worth more than €180,000 and boast gifts including a trip to Israel and toilet roll worth €200. Yesterday on RTÉ Radio 1, he told Áine Lawlor about a $5,000 voucher he received for plastic surgery in LA.

He pointed out that he had actually been offered a whole range of treatments thanks to Room’s success.

‘Okay, I’ll list the plastic surgery options I’ve been given. I don’t know whether this is just me and they’re trying to tell me something…

‘But from both the Oscars bag and various other gift bags – I can get a non-invasive laser fat removal process. It’s supposed to take about 25% off your middle.

‘There’s that $5,000 [voucher] of whatever you’re having yourself plastic surgery.

‘I’ve also got offered free laser eye surgery by apparently the best guy in California.

‘And there’s a Vampire Breast Lift. I don’t [know what it is]. Just out of sheer curiosity I looked into it.

‘It’s some kind of process where they use your own blood to inject, it’s presumably mostly women who do it, into that area to sort of plump things up,’ he said.

The goodie bags also included two holidays – a private walking tour of Japan worth €49,000 and a 10-day all expenses paid trip to Israel worth €50,000.

Abrahamson seemed to take issue with the Israel trip, describing it as ‘controversial’.

The director’s favourite item in the bag seemed to be a virtual reality headset.

He also revealed that he skipped the Madonna and Elton John Oscar soirees because he’s ‘not a great partygoer’.
