High-flying Déise’s modesty fools nobody

-

TO HEAR Waterford manager Derek McGrath say Tipperary are ‘four or five years ahead’ of the team currently leading Division 1A takes mind games to a new level. It’s total nonsense.

Waterford are the reigning Allianz League title holders and have continued that good form this spring.

With the Liam Sheedy- Éamon O’Shea era having come to an end, it would be accurate to suggest that Tipperary are the ones actually building a new team.

The damage done by losing another tight game to Kilkenny is hard to quantify.

We might not know the answer to that one until the summer.

Michael Ryan has brought a more direct approach to Tipperary since taking over, but he knows that particular style of play won’t cut much ice against the Déise.

Teams, in general, are struggling with the Waterford system, in terms of what to do and how to break it down.

Tipp’s star man Séamus Callanan was so isolated in last year’s Munster final.

He failed to get a sniff of the ball because of the sweeper system, so the Premier management might bring him out the field.

Waterford are the team building up a head of steam at the moment and could make it three from three.

The question is whether they increase their goalscoring rate themselves?
