An isolated house set amid the bleak beauty of the Yorkshire moors in the early 19th Century; a spirited foundling in search of a home; a growing attachment between the mysterious, Byronic master and his youthful new housekeeper. It’s hard to read The Vanishing and not be reminded of the considerable debt that Tobin owes to the Brontë sisters. But she adds layer upon layer of increasingly fevered intrigue, and just when you think you can guess where this story is going, it takes a turn for the unexpected. A little disjointed but undeniably page-turning.
