Why quotas?

IN her column, Mary Carr made reference to a photo taken at the opening of the Sport Ireland National Indoor Arena in Abbotstown in Dublin (MoS, January 29).

The photo featured 13 men and she said it ‘proves why gender quotas are a must in sport’. To follow Mary’s logic , all the men in that photo are white, so does she also think quotas should be set aside for black people? What’s wrong with giving people jobs based on their qualifications?

The BBC has followed Mary Carr’s thinking with disastrous consequences. In October, Jon Holmes, a BBC radio host and award-winning comedian, was axed from his hit Radio 4 programme, The Now Show, after 18 years. He was shocked when he was told the BBC was ‘recasting it with more women and diversity’. Is this what Mary Carr wants?
