FAIR City is soaring in the ratings, the Irish Mail on Sunday can reveal.

A marked increase in interest in the fate of the residents of Carrigstown generated an average audience of 539,000 last month –a 5% rise on January of last year – according to ratings figures released to the MoS.

The popular soap’s dramatic storylines are proving particularly popular with younger viewers.

Katy O’Brien is a favourite with viewers. She was kidnapped months ago by Ciaran Holloway in an act of revenge for the disappearance of his brother. The kidnap plot has involved a number of twists and turns that have gripped viewers. Ciaran most recently tried to bump off Heather after she uncovered his dark secret. The drama continues with fans wondering how the dramatic storyline will be brought to a conclusion.

An RTÉ spokesman said: ‘The January storylines have proved particularly popular with younger viewers attracting a 26% share of 1534s, up 31% on January 2016.’

The storyline around Niamh Brennan’s exacting revenge on her cheating husband Paul has also boosted ratings and helped the soap to become the most popular programme streamed on the RTÉ Player in playback and live streams, RTÉ revealed.
