The crazy story of Duracell Kelly
TONY KELLY might as well be the poster boy for the switch to a calendar-year season. If the GAA want a perfect example of how to back their case for change, look no further than the former Young Hurler of the Year. Kelly (right) played a starring role in Ballyea’s Munster club hurling final triumph over Glen Rovers in November. Instead of a scenario where the competition would be played off before Christmas, he had to wait 11 weeks for his next match. And then, after leading the charge against St Thomas in an All-Ireland semi, he was picked to play three games in seven days – for club, college and county. ‘Fix the fixtures’ is the Club Players’ Association mantra. A clearly defined calendar year season, with no crazy crossover, is a good place to start.
