The Humours Of Bandon ( touring nationwide) is actor, dancer and writer Margaret McAuliffe’s delightful take on the world of Irish dancing competitions: its hopes, joys, frustrations belligerent teachers, fussing relations, inscrutable judges and the problems of your bladder insisting on a trip to a dubious toilet while you’re wearing an elaborate dress and just about to be called to strut your stuff in Bonaparte’s Retreat. And missing your turn means you don’t get a second chance. In between all this, McAuliffe in the character of medal hopeful Annie takes us through the technical wizardry of dancing, unfolding the niceties of the art, not just in theory but with some elaborate displays of fancy footwork. The show, unfussily directed by Stefanie Preissner, which started life in last year’s Fringe Festival, has immense charm as it turns the story of a childhood hard slog into a statement of assured self-belief. Touring to nine venues February 23 to March 30. See fishamble.com
